2 Japan Trip Prologue 2

 Sup,
I'm Steven and I'm 22 years old right now and I will be graduating with a BA in archaeology from Simon Fraser University in around 3 weeks or so. I studied museum studies so I haven't gotten a chance to go onto a fieldschool so I thought this would be a good opportunity. Let's see what else....I'm a Taiwanese currently living in Vancouver right now and because I'm Taiwanese, we have a natural fondness of Japanese culture and people. I like to build Gundam models and play baseball. The plan after the fieldwork for me right now is to spend a few more days in Sapporo then head south and bum at my cousin's place in Tokyo then more bumming in Kyoto at a friend's place.

Last time on Spirited Away in Japan.
I applied to a fieldwork in Hokkaido as a Plan B if I did not get a real job in summer but turned out I got accepted to the project.

Ya, I got accepted. So much for Plan B. No word on any real jobs but Plan B already got back to me and accepted me. The mail talked about the details about the fieldwork and the acceptance deadline. Well, maybe I should do a little introduction about where the fieldwork. It takes place at Rebun Island of Hokkaido (please use the map above. the island that arrow is pointing at).

It's the most Northern island in Japan besides the uninhabited islands. It's so remote that most tour guide would not even bother to include it. Even wikipedia(Chinese) has only two paragraphs on it. So, I had no idea what to expect except that it might be possible to see Russia from there (No, it's not a Palin joke). I read the Japanese wikipedia about Rebun Island, only to find that parasites infestation used to be VERY common. Needless to say, it was not the Japan that I know of.

I discussed the trip with my mom and we agreed that if there were no museum job offers by the deadline then I would go to Rebun Island.

On the day of the deadline, no job offers. So, I signed the acceptance letter and mailed it to UofA.

My mom told me since I would be going to Japan then I might as well stay there a bit longer. (Meet on June 30th at Wakkanai. Fieldwork start on July 1st, ends on the 31st.) I told her that I would decide on what to do in August.

Few days after the deadline, people who signed up for the fieldwork began writing introduction about themselves and of course, I wrote one too.

When I was reading the email list from the introduction, I read that someone has a Chinese name that was displayed in Chinese characters. The only thing I knew about the person was that it was a girl and not from China(because the characters were in traditional form).

Only 2,3 weeks away from June 30th and my convocation was also fast approaching!

To be Continued...
