Spirited Away in Japan Episode 17

Ya, it's been a while but I will be updating this blog again.

As you may know, most of the content is based on my diary and what I remembered and I got lazier and lazier with the diary so I will be combining several days into 1 entry from now on.

Last time

We went to the museum in Kafuka but I felt sick afterwards.

I woke up feeling really sick. The usual running nose, sore throat, coughing...etc. I didn't feel like going to out to dig but I still went anyway.

I remember the weather wasn't very well and my nose just wouldn't quit sneezing. Terrible just terrible. Another thing that annoyed me was Ingrid. In my diary, I wrote down, "Ingrid was being an annoying dickshit as usual." Whatever she did or said, probably the latter, really got to me. I did however found a canid skull tho so that was exciting. The professors weren't sure if the skull was a dog skull or a fox one because there were foxes on the island and dogs were brought by people.

After the dig, I went to check out the Funadomari map because I remember seeing a pharmacy. I followed the map and got to the pharmacy and went in. There wasn't anybody in the store and I even said, "Suimasen~ Ano...." I said it really loud and still, nobody came. I saw the cold medicine right in front of me in the store counter but sigh*....so out of my reach....

At dinner, there was this special candy that we had never gotten it before (and we never got it again...) and I remember Toshiko san was explaining about it too. Everybody ate it and said it was really good but unfortunately, I lost my sense of taste that night.

After dinner, either Toshiko san or Mama san noticed I kept on sneezing so one of them asked me if I had brought medicine. I said no, so Mama san just got me this medicine pack which I paid, I think it was around 200 yen.

I went to sleep a bit early because I just felt like shit.

The next day when I woke up, I noticed my throat wasn't so sore anymore.

It was raining slightly but we went out to dig anyway. We dug for about 2 hrs until the rain forced us to take an early lunch. Again, Ingrid was being annoying and according to myself, she was being an annoying fuckface. We were anticipating whether we were going to keep on digging or not because the rain just kept on falling with no sign that it would stop. Finally, Dr. Weber decided we would head back to the hotel.

We got back to the hotel and I didn't do anything until Kato sensei asked Chen and I if we wanted a ride to Marine mart. We went there and bought loads of candies and I even bought a mini instant noodles. The candies I bought were mostly area-limited or season limited candies. I also bought two packs of caramel candies, chocolate and cream flavor! Those flavors were just so exotic to me....

Tempura soba/

Made in Hokkaido...not really

Pretz!
We walked into Pan ya san's shop. It turned out his name was 哀原, Aihara. Even though, we knew his name but we still refer to him as Pan ya san in the future. We also saw his wife who asked us what we liked to have for lunch. I said the chocolate bread was good so that would be good enough for me. Chen said she wanted the yakisoba (noodle) bread, it's something she had been talking to me forever ever since we got on the island.

After dinner, I sat down at the lobby and chatted with Shota. I asked him if he had a girlfriend and he said no. I also asked him which of the girls here was the cutest. He blushed and I made a gesture towards Jess who happened to be there. He said yes, it was her. I told Chen about Shota not having a girlfriend but I didn't tell her about the Jess thing.

Went to bed at 10 and ended the day.....

Ingrid was being an annoying dickface."

在社區中心的時候Ingrid好像又說了什麼煩人的是所以我日記寫說" she was being an annoying fuckface."

我好像還沒在tw看過這兩種口味/I don't think I've seen the 2 flavors in tw before.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 15

Previously....
Drunks invited us to go drink with them.

It was the day for matsuri but we had to dig.... If I remember correctly, Dr.Weber made us a deal saying that  we could go to the matsuri in the afternoon in exchange for working half a day the day after(Sunday). Honestly tho, I was too excited for this so I didn't write anything down in my diary about the dig lol so I'm just going to skip ahead to the matsuri part.

We got back to the hotel and went to the town center where we saw the mikoshi, the most important thing in a Shinto jinsha (i have no idea how to describe this in English) on a truck being driven further into town. The mikoshi carrying started on the street where Marine Mart is located (there's only one street anyway) and it was the kids who were doing the carrying.

When I showed the video to my grandparents, they said he did the same thing and yelled out the same exact things too.

The dancing part was really cool too and you could tell there would always be the kids who dance a bit slower than the others. After it was done, the mikoshi was once again loaded up to the truck and was driven to the elementary school in Funadomari and that was where the main event would be.

We walked to the school which was about less than 5 minutes away from Marine Mart. This time, it was the younger kids who had to dance. According to Chen, when the kids were dancing, one of them apparently peed himself and his mom had to take away from the group LOL OWNED! It was great to see the kids though especially one this island of less than 3000 people. After the event, we walked around the school square for some food. There were yakitori, takoyaki, yakisoba, hot dog, and shaved ice. I think I ate all of them except the noodle.

Chen and I went to the beach after the school's event. We took a walk along the beach and it was interesting to see the sand there was mainly made out of broken shells. We saw the park near our hotel and that park and some interesting playthings....like something with an octopus shaped thingy. I really enjoyed that walk probably because the day was a good one and we just had a lot of food too and maybe, just maybe walking along the beach reminded me of my childhood of playing on the beach of Hsinchu. We later saw Maeda san, Takafumi, and Dai on the beach. We started talking and together we walked toward Kafuka town center again. Maeda san told Chen and I that she thought we were a couple then I laughed. I said Chen got a crush on Shota and I told them about Ms.*F. We ended back at Marine Mart again and this time I bought a ramune because it was so nostalgic. I tried to open but i ended up with the soda all over my shirt. Chen gave me a look like I was some kind of an idiot. Hmmm....I don't disagree with her. I also bought 2 dorayaki, one is chocolate flavor and the other is cheese flavor. Chen and I learned some Japanese from them and we began to grow more familiar with them and I think it was that day on that we started calling Maeda san, Toshiko san instead (will be referring to her as Toshiko san from now on in the future entries). We went back to the hotel after then I remembered there was another matsuri at Hamanaka's elementary school, at first, we weren't going to go but we thought we probably wouldn't have another chance so we went anyway. On the way there, there were a lot of caterpillars on the road, probably was the season for them or something. There were some pretty fat ones and I was yelling, "Chen, check this one out! It's huge!" or "There are so many of them!" Let's just say she was not a fan of them at all. We got to the school which was about a few minutes away from our digging site. We went in and saw Shuu at the yakitori stand and today he was actually sober. He said hello and we stayed at the school for a while to check out the games. When we were going to leave, I wanted to buy yakitori from Shuu but he wouldn't take my money so he just gave it to me for free. It tasted better than the one than Kafuka's. When we left, there was a little boy who knew we were foreigners and started shooting me with his toy gun thing. I didn't do anything back but Chen started chasing him.

When we got back to the hotel, we saw a police officer there, uh oh busted. No, actually, someone from our group found some money at the Kafuka elementary school so the police just came to record down some information.  Our dinner was spectacular as usual and probably even more so than before. We had a famous Hokkaido dish, Genghis Khan Dish. It's lamb stewed in pot and it's quite a popular dish across Hokkaido. After dinner, Toshiko san were teaching us Japanese at the hotel lobby.

Every fun day had to end and I went to bed at around 10 something.

Toshiko.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 13

When I was waiting for breakfast at the lobby, I saw Seung-wan walking down from upstairs and I was like WTF!? Her face from cheek down was so swollen. It kind of reminded me of those goldfish with those baggy eyes. She said it might had been caused by infection because she got her wisdom tooth(teeth?)pulled before coming to Japan. She confirmed it when she called her dad who is a doctor in America. If I remember correctly, Rebun Island doesn't have its own dentistry. So, they had to rely on the weekly dentist visit from Wakkanai but lucky for Seung-wan, that day was the day when the dentist would be in Rebun.

The dig was getting more tiresome because of the increasing heat as well as that annoying duty of carrying sandbag to the little sandbag mountain we had built. It was getting so high that we had to arrange some sandbags to be used as stairs so we could put more bags on it. What really impressed me the most that day was Seung-wan still stuck around digging with us with her condition and all. In the afternoon, the professor drove her to the local clinic to see the dentist while we pressed on with our work. Erin Bird found an oil lamp from early Showa Period and I learned that from 2 locals who were checking to see what we were doing. The lamp was cool and all but since it was there meant that we hadn't dug deep enough yet.

When we got back to the hotel, Seung-wan was in a much better spirit. We (loads of people) went further into town to go to the super market, Marine Mart, for food. Seung-wan said she wanted to eat Kimchi saying she could eat that no matter under any circumstances. So, she bought a big can of kimchi but as for me, I stuck to my candy-buying routine.

True to her words, Seung-wan ate the whole can of kimchi LOL. At least she had the appetite which is always good.

After dinner, we sat at the lobby area. I saw Shota's bag had a New Era sticker on it so I asked him if he liked the brand. He said yes, so I showed him my collection of New Era hats. He then showed me his New Era bag which was won from a prize draw. He was kind enough to let me borrow his book on New Era even though I didn't ask for it lol. I think around the same time, Maeda san asked us to write our names down on a sheet of paper, probably thought it would be easier to call us by names huh?
