Spirited Away in Japan Episode 15

Previously....
Drunks invited us to go drink with them.

It was the day for matsuri but we had to dig.... If I remember correctly, Dr.Weber made us a deal saying that  we could go to the matsuri in the afternoon in exchange for working half a day the day after(Sunday). Honestly tho, I was too excited for this so I didn't write anything down in my diary about the dig lol so I'm just going to skip ahead to the matsuri part.

We got back to the hotel and went to the town center where we saw the mikoshi, the most important thing in a Shinto jinsha (i have no idea how to describe this in English) on a truck being driven further into town. The mikoshi carrying started on the street where Marine Mart is located (there's only one street anyway) and it was the kids who were doing the carrying.

When I showed the video to my grandparents, they said he did the same thing and yelled out the same exact things too.

The dancing part was really cool too and you could tell there would always be the kids who dance a bit slower than the others. After it was done, the mikoshi was once again loaded up to the truck and was driven to the elementary school in Funadomari and that was where the main event would be.

We walked to the school which was about less than 5 minutes away from Marine Mart. This time, it was the younger kids who had to dance. According to Chen, when the kids were dancing, one of them apparently peed himself and his mom had to take away from the group LOL OWNED! It was great to see the kids though especially one this island of less than 3000 people. After the event, we walked around the school square for some food. There were yakitori, takoyaki, yakisoba, hot dog, and shaved ice. I think I ate all of them except the noodle.

Chen and I went to the beach after the school's event. We took a walk along the beach and it was interesting to see the sand there was mainly made out of broken shells. We saw the park near our hotel and that park and some interesting playthings....like something with an octopus shaped thingy. I really enjoyed that walk probably because the day was a good one and we just had a lot of food too and maybe, just maybe walking along the beach reminded me of my childhood of playing on the beach of Hsinchu. We later saw Maeda san, Takafumi, and Dai on the beach. We started talking and together we walked toward Kafuka town center again. Maeda san told Chen and I that she thought we were a couple then I laughed. I said Chen got a crush on Shota and I told them about Ms.*F. We ended back at Marine Mart again and this time I bought a ramune because it was so nostalgic. I tried to open but i ended up with the soda all over my shirt. Chen gave me a look like I was some kind of an idiot. Hmmm....I don't disagree with her. I also bought 2 dorayaki, one is chocolate flavor and the other is cheese flavor. Chen and I learned some Japanese from them and we began to grow more familiar with them and I think it was that day on that we started calling Maeda san, Toshiko san instead (will be referring to her as Toshiko san from now on in the future entries). We went back to the hotel after then I remembered there was another matsuri at Hamanaka's elementary school, at first, we weren't going to go but we thought we probably wouldn't have another chance so we went anyway. On the way there, there were a lot of caterpillars on the road, probably was the season for them or something. There were some pretty fat ones and I was yelling, "Chen, check this one out! It's huge!" or "There are so many of them!" Let's just say she was not a fan of them at all. We got to the school which was about a few minutes away from our digging site. We went in and saw Shuu at the yakitori stand and today he was actually sober. He said hello and we stayed at the school for a while to check out the games. When we were going to leave, I wanted to buy yakitori from Shuu but he wouldn't take my money so he just gave it to me for free. It tasted better than the one than Kafuka's. When we left, there was a little boy who knew we were foreigners and started shooting me with his toy gun thing. I didn't do anything back but Chen started chasing him.

When we got back to the hotel, we saw a police officer there, uh oh busted. No, actually, someone from our group found some money at the Kafuka elementary school so the police just came to record down some information.  Our dinner was spectacular as usual and probably even more so than before. We had a famous Hokkaido dish, Genghis Khan Dish. It's lamb stewed in pot and it's quite a popular dish across Hokkaido. After dinner, Toshiko san were teaching us Japanese at the hotel lobby.

Every fun day had to end and I went to bed at around 10 something.

Toshiko.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 12

Eggy/

In the previous entry, I forgot to mention that two Japanese archaeologists joined us. One is Tomoda sensei and the other one.....I forgot his name.

Anyways

I got up at around 6 which felt a lot better than waking up at 4 or 5. The day was a good one too, a lot better than the previous miserable day. Judging from my photo I guess I had egg for breakfast and with that I always pour in some soy sauce then add it to my rice. Simple but delicious.

The digging was the same as before but we started a test pit in which we found tons of marine mammal bones. I'm not sure when we started putting finds in bags but I think it began around that time or so.

Tomoda sensei/Tomoda 老師

Good day

Lunch was slightly longer than usual because Tomoda sensei brought us some cookies from his old school, Hokkaido University. On the label, it reads, "Sapporo Agricultural School." Strange, that's a weird name. We also had salad and shrimp burger and that burger was to die for~~~ easily the best lunch we had.

Sean, Jess, Seung-wan, Joran

After work, I went to the grocery store while wearing the sandals from the hotel. I think it was the wrong size so it felt pretty painful the whole way. I walked in pain and got to the store but turned out it was closed for the day. I decided to walk back to the hotel and I remembered people said they were going out for a walk. I looked for my friends but couldn't find them with m bloody toe.

Dinner was a crab feast but due to my allergy, I could only watch people enjoying them >_<! Luckily, the kitchen gave me replacement food, ginger pork.....I guess that was better? I gave my king crab to Chen and in turn she gave me her sashimi, well a lot of people gave me their sashimi. We also had uni and since most people didn't like them so I took their share. Hahaha.

Before I went to bed, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I hadn't shaved since I left Vancouver.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode7

Lake side sign/

Weber.

Last time I met everyone and almost got hit by a car.

Anyways back to the story.

"#^$%&^*&(%^*&("

What? What the hell? Public broadcast system? How come there was a public announcement in the morning? I woke up to the loud PA system at around 3. I tried to go back to sleep but couldn't, so I decided to go take a walk. The moment I walked out of the hotel, I saw the hill that we climbed the night before. It wasn't much of a hill but I decided to go back up again to see if I could see anything this time. I didn't. It was way too foggy to see anything. Later, I walked into the town and noticed the "convenient store" was actually a grocery store. The street was dead and there wasn't much to see so I went back to the hotel. Before I went back to the hotel, I stopped at Lake Kushu. There was a crow there and he really hated me because he clearly was gunning for my head, several time. I didn't want to get a bloody head so I hurried back to the hotel.

Evil Crow

Breakfast was typical Japanese style. Softboiled egg, fish, miso soup, pickled vegetable, marinated squid, and rice. I honestly hadn't had any real breakfast for a long time since usually I only eat bread in the morning.

After breakfast, we spent about 30minutes getting ready for the dig. When we got there, I saw everyone putting on their sunscreen and I thought, "I'm not going to use. I'm Asian! Who has heard of Asian getting sun burn before?" So, I didn't apply the sunscreen. We spent the first 2 hours or so in cleaning up the site. There were so much stuff on the surface but we managed to clear them all out. We then divided the sites into two and split the group accordingly. We started digging and we found some shells pretty quick right off the bat. I remember it was Seung-wan who found it and she was so excited saying, "OH MY GOD! I FOUND SOMETHING!!!!" Ya....it wasn't much of a find but it was still pretty cool. There were some minor annoyance such as finding roots. Roots were our public enemy at that time because they were hard to cut and sometimes require a saw to saw through the whole thing. I was getting a bit thirsty so I went for my water but only to find that I didn't tighten the lid right so everything leaked out....oh well at least the professors brought some. Just like that, it was 12.The thing about Rebun is that when it gets to 12, the town plays Edelweis on its PA system, so adorable. We ate lunch at a community center not far away from the site. Our food was from a contracted bakery. We had bread and salad. We were supposed to take only 1 bread but I accidentally took 2....it was an "honest" mistake. The community center itself was at a nice location, we could see the shoreline from the windows but if there was one thing I had to complain would be the washroom. The washroom had a really strong smell. We started digging at one and in the afternoon, it just felt like it was getting hotter and hotter. It was definitely above 25 even though, on the project description described the island's summer climate as being chilly. We finished the work at 5 and went back to the hotel.

I immediately went to the grocery store and bought some chocolates. I noticed that there were a lot of cartoon traffic warning signs and I'm pretty sure they didn't have the copyright for those hahaha. When I walked passed the lake, I saw Mt. Rishiri. Wow, being able to see such a mountain on daily basis must be a pretty cool thing living here. I got back to the hotel and sat at the lobby. Chen was there too. Kato sensei came and bought a Sapporo beer from the vending machine and started telling us two about beer in Japan. He said that Kansai prefers Asahi, Kanto likes Kirin, and Hokkaido likes Sapporo. I told him that Sapporo Beer had been broadcasting a lot of ads on tv in Vancouver in the past year and he said it's his favorite beer. Chen and I thought it was kind of strange of him talking to us about beer but nonetheless we began to think he's an interesting person. Come dinner time, we sat at the dining hall again, when the food arrived, I was shocked to see the food. Our dinner was once again FABULOUS! SEAFOOD, SEAFOOD, SEAFOOD!

After dinner, I went to take a shower and just my luck, another person was in there. When I was showering, I noticed whenever water touched my body, it gave me a burning sensation but it wasn't such a big deal. When I finished, Ed told me he was going to have a Game of Thrones party. I watched part of it then went down to the lobby. I saw Chen there and asked her if she wanted to go take a walk. She said sure so we went out for a night stroll. We walked all the way to the little alleys behind the elementary school and we stopped when we were at a crossroad and because she's a scaredy cat so we headed back. We stopped at the lakeside and started chatting sitting down. We talked about everything and even things I thought would be too private for me to talk about. Yes, she knows some secrets about me but I also know some secrets about her lol. We saw a huge green moth and she thought it was disgusting but I insisted of seeing it closer so I somewhat forced her to see it close with me.

When we got back to the hotel, it was close to light-off so we headed back to our rooms and ended our first day.
