Spirited Away in Japan Episode 14

Got up at the usual 5am.

What was different about the dig that day was that there a bunch of loud drunks at the house next to us. When we were doing our usual digging, we heard loud, loud laughter. We thought it was kind of strange but we didn't pay much attention to them until we realized that they hadn't stop laughing in the whole morning. The inevitable conclusion was they were drunk even before noon. It was either Tomoda or Kato sensei who told us there was a matsuri (festival) the day after so they were just preparing for that....by getting drunk. Even after lunch, they were still drinking and laughing. I noticed one of them looked at us and soon, they all came to check out what we were doing. They invited us to go drink with them after the dig even though we had our doubts, for example, they were drunk and they offered to drive us there. Right..... They really insisted so we couldn't say no so we went after work.

We went on our usual van but Tomoda sensei rode on the back of those drunks' truck. Sigh.....he did that just for us lol. The shrine is located at a small hill by a small dock. It was a fox worshipping jinsha called, "Inari Jinsha." These kinds of fox worshipping shrines are located throughout Japan with the center being at the one in Kyoto. We got invited into the shrine where they had food and beer. One of the drunks introduced to me as Shuu. Amanda said Shuu is the PTA president at the local elementary school. I was like wow.....PTA president was DUI. He was asking me where about where we were from. I said I was from Taiwan then he said Taiwan is a nice place. I asked him had he ever been there before and he said no. LOL He also asked me who the "cute girl" was. I said that girl's name was Jess and she was only 19. So before we left, we took a group photo which I think it's one of the best picture that I have. So, Shuu was giving us directions for backing our car but I think he was too drunk to give us the correct direction since we almost fell from the little hill. It was cool tho for him......since he was all smiles

Tom drinking. Daniela smiling.

By the time we got back to the hotel, the internet was set up. All of us were really looking forward to the matsuri but Dr. Weber said we still had work to do so going there was out of the question. We were really disappointed but at least we had a great day. I ended my diary of the day with this sentence, "Now hanging out in lobby doing nothing except this and drinking calpis."

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 12

Eggy/

In the previous entry, I forgot to mention that two Japanese archaeologists joined us. One is Tomoda sensei and the other one.....I forgot his name.

Anyways

I got up at around 6 which felt a lot better than waking up at 4 or 5. The day was a good one too, a lot better than the previous miserable day. Judging from my photo I guess I had egg for breakfast and with that I always pour in some soy sauce then add it to my rice. Simple but delicious.

The digging was the same as before but we started a test pit in which we found tons of marine mammal bones. I'm not sure when we started putting finds in bags but I think it began around that time or so.

Tomoda sensei/Tomoda 老師

Good day

Lunch was slightly longer than usual because Tomoda sensei brought us some cookies from his old school, Hokkaido University. On the label, it reads, "Sapporo Agricultural School." Strange, that's a weird name. We also had salad and shrimp burger and that burger was to die for~~~ easily the best lunch we had.

Sean, Jess, Seung-wan, Joran

After work, I went to the grocery store while wearing the sandals from the hotel. I think it was the wrong size so it felt pretty painful the whole way. I walked in pain and got to the store but turned out it was closed for the day. I decided to walk back to the hotel and I remembered people said they were going out for a walk. I looked for my friends but couldn't find them with m bloody toe.

Dinner was a crab feast but due to my allergy, I could only watch people enjoying them >_<! Luckily, the kitchen gave me replacement food, ginger pork.....I guess that was better? I gave my king crab to Chen and in turn she gave me her sashimi, well a lot of people gave me their sashimi. We also had uni and since most people didn't like them so I took their share. Hahaha.

Before I went to bed, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I hadn't shaved since I left Vancouver.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 10

(接下了的話很難翻所以我直接用英文) I said that I liker more than all the stars in the world. I like you deeper than all the oceans combined.

Dinner/

Previously
I didn't write that much because my diary sucked.

This time is slightly better......slightly.

"Ding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

At least waking up to Sean's alarm at 6 was better than to the broadcast. I really felt the 2,3 extra hours that I got was awesome. I didn't feel like dying lol. When we were eating breakfast, the professors told us the dig was cancelled for the day due to the rain.

Well, how should I spend the day-off? Obviously, taking a walk wasn't an option so I spent the morning at Chen's room chatting with her. Once again, we talked about a lot of things and she started asking me some personal questions. I didn't feel I should hide anything from her so I answered everything she asked like....

"How did you tell her you like her?"
"We were on the bus after dinner, I knew if I didn't say anything then she would get off at her stop which was before mine. So, I told her that I had something for her back at my place. After I gave her the thing, I decided to walk her back to her place. At the corner around her place, I thought it was now or never. I told her I really like her. After a pause, she asked me how much I liked her. I said I liked her as much as the stars in the world. After a pause again, she asked me if I was willing to wait for her. I said yes. She blushed and said ok. I said I'd wait for her until she got back. When she was the door, I yelled I would wait."

Chen thought I was super corny.

.................................................................

Our lunch were croquet burger, katsu, and salad. When we were eating, I noticed there were some big crabs sitting on the counter. Chances were they were going to be in our stomach for dinner.

In the afternoon, I asked if people wanted anything from the grocery store since I had just ran out of my stash of candies. Jess wanted the koala cookies( I knew she liked those). So I went out in pouring rain and got a lot of candies. I, personally, bought 3 kinds of Meiji milk chocolates. Even though I had extra hours of sleep but I still felt really sleepy in the afternoon so I took a 2hour nap.

At dinner, we had crabs but it wasn't the hairy big ones but those ones with long legs. I, unfortunately, am allergic to crabs so I gave mine to Chen. I told Maeda san about my allergy so she got the kitchen to bring me another dish instead.

I was in Chen's room for the night. I showed how Ms.*F looked like to Chen and Seung-wan and they both agreed she's too pretty for me....ya assholes.

That wrapped up the day.

To be Continued.....

I promise the next entry will be longer.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode6

Lindsey Friedman-
Kathryn Reusch-

Kato Sensei.
Hugh-

Last time....

We had finally arrived! No more plane or ferry rides!

Back to the story

The first we did when we got there was to decide on the rooms and the roommates. Joran, Ed, and I would share the room together. The testosterone-filled room was a Japanese style one. It was a decent sized room for the three of us and we all had our own space to our stuff. When we were unloading out luggage, I finally had the chance to check for the things in my suitcase......I......did not lost a single thing!

Not long after we sorted thing out in the room, we were called downstairs for dinner.

I realized that one of the hotel staff might know English because she seemed to understand what was going on and what we were talking about.

Dinner.....was just awesome. We had crabs, sashimi, and all sorts of things. I just love seafood! Back then I thought this was a good meal to welcome us because I thought we would be eating bread all the time.

We also did another round of introduction at dinner.

Amanda Gomes- An American who could speak Japanese. She had studied in Kyushu before and knew Tom prior to this project.
Erin Jessup- Big Erin is doing her master at UofA. She is really skinny!
Nikki Burt- An American doing her phd at UofA.
Lindsey Friedman- An American who is doing her doctoral at Cambridge. Maybe it's because of the studying in England thing, so her English got a mixture of both countries.
Kathryn Reusch- An American who is doing her doctoral at Oxford. Unlike Lindsey, she talks "normally."
Katie Waterhorse- She is from Swaziland. Her accent is funky! It's like Leonardo DiCaprio's in Blood Diamond!
Jess Egan- She just finished her first year at Cambridge and is the youngest one from the dig. Oh and she is British.
Daniela Pozo- Second year student from UofA(actually third....but I didn't know that til 6months later) and I think she is the smallest person from the dig(stature wise).

Professors
Dr. Weber- The director of the project. He speaks Polish, English, and Russian. He teaches at UofA.
Hugh- A Candian. (I forgot his last name.......or rather I never found out his last name)
Dustin- An American. (same as Hugh, see above.)
Kato Sensei- Kato Sensei teaches at Hokkaido University and knows Japanese, English, and Russian. We usually just call him, Kato Sensei.

During the dinner, the professors told us that the project would start the next day and went over the details. Breakfast would be at 7, start the dig at 8:30, lunch from 12-1, finish at 4. They also said we would work 6 days a week and I thought, wait, didn't the project description said we had the weekend off? I heard some murmur and realized others were thinking about that too. One other announcement was the communal bath! One big bath for people to go. That means seeing other people naked.

After dinner, I went to take a shower at the communal bath. Just my luck, Dustin was there. Right......awkward. I was surprised and impressed that he already remembered my name and which school I graduated from. Later, I FINALLY changed into my new clothes. It was like a dream come true having something new to wear.

We (Joran, Ingrid, Seung-wan, and I. Erin Bird was there too?) went for a walk later that night. I almost got hit by a car when we were crossing the road. I completely forgot that cars drive the opposite way in Japan. I really thought I could get used to it since I didn't have any trouble in Wakkanai. There weren't a lot of things to see and everything was pitch dark so we didn't stay out very long but we did manage to talk about a horror story involving an old lady and meat buns (at least that's how I remembered it). We also went up to the little hill across from the hotel and because there was nothing to see so we back to the hotel right after.

We stayed in the lobby and chatted until 10, when the hotel owner's wife came out and said it was lights out time. With that, we ended our first day on Rebun.
