Spirited Away in Japan Episode 16

Tudor can beat these guys up/Tudor

Eclipse Observation Monument

Shiroi Koibito/

Previously
Matsuri was pretty cool~

I woke up to find my sore was a bit sore but oh well it was probably nothing....or so I thought. It was raining so we were waiting for any announce on whether we would still be digging or not. As expected, Dr. Weber announced that the dig would be canceled for the entire day. We thought we had the entire day off but Amanda then told us that she would be arranging us to go to the local museum in Kafuka which was fine by everyone. I had been wanting to go back to Kafuka for a while now because I wanted to buy Shiroi Koibito, a kind of white chocolate cookie.

Rewind back to few days ago...

I asked Toshiko san if Funadomari had a place that was selling Shiroikoibito. She said Funadomari isn't a tourist spot so I wouldn't be able to find it in town. Takafumi said I might be able to find it in Kafuka tho.

So we ended up spending the morning in Kafuka.

Kafuka Museum is a small municipal museum but nonetheless, it still has a lot of information on the development of Rebun Island. The exhibits include contemporary Rebun culture all the way back to Jomon period.

There were some pretty interesting artifacts such as several bone tools as well as some finely crafted bone figurines. The exhibit's section on the early development of Rebun Island made me realize something.....Yanagiya san's ancestors were some of the first people who came to Rebun Island! So in a way...Shota's family are bunch of trailblazers.

After the visit, we split into two groups. Ed, Seung-wan, Chen, Erin, Daniela, and I went to see the jinsha in Kafuka. The jinsha has a monument for an eclipse observation....what a weird reason to build a monument. When we were there, Seung-wan was complaining about the weather being too hot. She asked me if I could lend her my shirt. I said sure but then when she was putting it on, she was like, "Why is this so small? I can't button the shirt? Is this a girl's one?" No, Seung-wan. It's not a girl's clothes. You have boobs while I will have man boobs in the future but that was why the shirt was small. When we left, we saw two little girls, probably sisters and like kids from Funadomari, they politely greeted us. We were going to a Buddhist temple but it was closed and wasn't the way we imagined it as it was super new.

From Seung-wan's camera/Seung-wan的照片

We got back to the dock and bought some souvenir and I finally bought my Shiroi Koibito! We sat down on the dock and saw a painting that says, "We <3 Rebun." I took a picture of it and it was probably the best picture I had taken in Japan.

I <3 Rebun too
Shiroi Koibito/

When we got back, I secretly gave Chen a piece of Shiroi Koibito. I knew that she wanted to try it too from our past conversations so I just decided to give her one. I also gave Toshiko san one too for her hard work of taking care of us.

After we got back and ate lunch, Chen and the others went on the hiking trail by the lake while I went to the jinsha in Funadomari. The jinsha is located on the hill at the end of the town center on a hill. The bottom of the hill was where the kids started their matsuri parade. From the top of the hill, I was able to see all the way to Hamanaka where we were digging. Just an awesome view. Everyone returned by late afternoon and they were telling me about a horse they saw and about the horse's giant 5th leg hahahaha.

The dinner was fabulous and it was nice to have non-miso soup for a change. We had a creamy pumpkin/squash soup~ The tataki was nice too because I'm a big fan of any tataki.

After dinner, Toshiko san taught us Japanese in the lobby. Such a good teacher~

At night, a bunch of foreigners showed up at the hotel! Oh my God......foreigners, well new foreigners.... Turned out they were had a conference in Sapporo then after that they started traveling and they somehow ended up in Rebun. They came to Rebun-so instead of other hotels because they were asking where they could stay in Rebun and they happened to have asked the staff at the museum. So the staff naturally just told them where the biggest concentration of foreigners were on the island. They later went to sing Karaoke~

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 13

When I was waiting for breakfast at the lobby, I saw Seung-wan walking down from upstairs and I was like WTF!? Her face from cheek down was so swollen. It kind of reminded me of those goldfish with those baggy eyes. She said it might had been caused by infection because she got her wisdom tooth(teeth?)pulled before coming to Japan. She confirmed it when she called her dad who is a doctor in America. If I remember correctly, Rebun Island doesn't have its own dentistry. So, they had to rely on the weekly dentist visit from Wakkanai but lucky for Seung-wan, that day was the day when the dentist would be in Rebun.

The dig was getting more tiresome because of the increasing heat as well as that annoying duty of carrying sandbag to the little sandbag mountain we had built. It was getting so high that we had to arrange some sandbags to be used as stairs so we could put more bags on it. What really impressed me the most that day was Seung-wan still stuck around digging with us with her condition and all. In the afternoon, the professor drove her to the local clinic to see the dentist while we pressed on with our work. Erin Bird found an oil lamp from early Showa Period and I learned that from 2 locals who were checking to see what we were doing. The lamp was cool and all but since it was there meant that we hadn't dug deep enough yet.

When we got back to the hotel, Seung-wan was in a much better spirit. We (loads of people) went further into town to go to the super market, Marine Mart, for food. Seung-wan said she wanted to eat Kimchi saying she could eat that no matter under any circumstances. So, she bought a big can of kimchi but as for me, I stuck to my candy-buying routine.

True to her words, Seung-wan ate the whole can of kimchi LOL. At least she had the appetite which is always good.

After dinner, we sat at the lobby area. I saw Shota's bag had a New Era sticker on it so I asked him if he liked the brand. He said yes, so I showed him my collection of New Era hats. He then showed me his New Era bag which was won from a prize draw. He was kind enough to let me borrow his book on New Era even though I didn't ask for it lol. I think around the same time, Maeda san asked us to write our names down on a sheet of paper, probably thought it would be easier to call us by names huh?

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 12

Eggy/

In the previous entry, I forgot to mention that two Japanese archaeologists joined us. One is Tomoda sensei and the other one.....I forgot his name.

Anyways

I got up at around 6 which felt a lot better than waking up at 4 or 5. The day was a good one too, a lot better than the previous miserable day. Judging from my photo I guess I had egg for breakfast and with that I always pour in some soy sauce then add it to my rice. Simple but delicious.

The digging was the same as before but we started a test pit in which we found tons of marine mammal bones. I'm not sure when we started putting finds in bags but I think it began around that time or so.

Tomoda sensei/Tomoda 老師

Good day

Lunch was slightly longer than usual because Tomoda sensei brought us some cookies from his old school, Hokkaido University. On the label, it reads, "Sapporo Agricultural School." Strange, that's a weird name. We also had salad and shrimp burger and that burger was to die for~~~ easily the best lunch we had.

After work, I went to the grocery store while wearing the sandals from the hotel. I think it was the wrong size so it felt pretty painful the whole way. I walked in pain and got to the store but turned out it was closed for the day. I decided to walk back to the hotel and I remembered people said they were going out for a walk. I looked for my friends but couldn't find them with m bloody toe.

Dinner was a crab feast but due to my allergy, I could only watch people enjoying them >_<! Luckily, the kitchen gave me replacement food, ginger pork.....I guess that was better? I gave my king crab to Chen and in turn she gave me her sashimi, well a lot of people gave me their sashimi. We also had uni and since most people didn't like them so I took their share. Hahaha.

Before I went to bed, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I hadn't shaved since I left Vancouver.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 11

I had 2 strange dreams. The first dream was about Chen working at footlocker. The second dream was about Ms.*F. The dreams weren't particularly pleasant so I woke up with a horrible mood and not to mention it was about 4am, an hour earlier than my usual wake up time.

The weather was still miserable but we decided to carry out the dig anyway because we don't want to fall behind on the schedule. That day was especially cold, windy, and wet and what made it worse was that I forgot to bring my gloves. In the first half of the dig, I dug up a weird bone that belonged to a part of the vertebrate. It was a lot bigger than what I have seen from the human skeletons that I had learned a few years  back, so I asked Hugh what the bone was. He said he wasn't sure but probably belonged to a marine mammal. The rain was heavy enough that we had to go to lunch 30minutes earlier than usual. During the afternoon dig, the weather cleared up a bit as it was only misty. Seung-wan was saying out loud to everyone that Ms.*F is way too pretty for me..... I don't disagree. On the other side, people seemed to have found fragments of a skull and a definite canine but unfortunately my side was still pretty boring. The rain eventually returned so we called off the dig an hour early.

excavating/挖掘中

When I got back to my room, I noticed there were a lot of ants crawling near the window. I told Maeda san about the problem. She said the hotel has this issue every summer but they would do their best to get rid of them. Before dinner, I made shortcuts to my comic files on my computer because I didn't want Chen to touch my naughty files.

lobby/大廳

Our dinner for that night was seafood as usual including a regional dish called chan chan yaki. That dish is about having fish, fish cake, cabbage simmer in a small pot and I think miso is used for marination. That night , we(Seung-wan, Chen, me) were watched a show about a crazy wife who plotted a murder for her husband. It was pretty ridiculous but we had a good time.

That's it for that day.
