Wait, there's also Amanda but......I never figured out which room she slept in.....There was even a short thing about that but that will be for another day.

Caterpillar
When we got to Rebun, it must had been caterpillar season since they were everywhere! On Rebun, the wind is very strong so it was pretty funny to see them crawl, it was like seeing a fast-forwarding of  regular caterpillar crawling. When they move their body shape becomes like this ---> Ω

Takafumi
Takafumi turned out to be somekind of a toy salesman from Sapporo. Don't know what was going on with the job, didn't want to ask.

Tudor
Tudor is a beast. Tudor could dig so fast and still not miss any potential lithics. Tudor is like Jesus. There was a hill besides the site and one day when we finished work, we just saw Tudor on top of that hill. It must had been only maybe 10 minutes since our work was done and he climbed that hill in that short amount of time. People go to the beach to swim sometimes but they never venture off far except Tudor. People were amazed by Tudor's awesomeness but he, himself was quite modest and embarrassed about it. Tudor is also a dad to a 1yr old daughter at that time and he is happily married to his wife. It probably must had been hard for him since we were without internet for a while... One time I said something like, "Tudor doesn't need to buy a plane ticket home. He can just dig his way back to Romania." Tudor is GOD.

Local Kids
Usually by the time we got off work, classes would be out (Japanese students got classes in July), so whenever we went into town, we would see kids. The kids were so polite as they would always politely hello to us. I like polite kids then I would get cruel reminder of my ill-mannered friends.

Pun-ya san
Pun-ya san is the local bakery owner and he was the one who delivered lunch to us. Whenever we saw him when we were working then it meant that lunch was close! He and Edelweiss were the symbols of our lunch.

Seals
There are seals at Rebun and you could see them when you look out to the ocean. They're kinda like dogs of the sea. They bark (right word for seal?) and they look like stones from afar but there were so many of them that they really couldn't be missed.

Takafumi

Tudor

Pun=麵包. Ya=屋. 我們平常吃的午餐就是由船泊鎮上麵包店的老闆幫我們送過來的. 當他出現的時就代表午餐時間就要到了.

日本旅Spirited Away in Japan 番外篇 Side Story-1

Dai- Dai

Erin Bird-

Tom-

Why am I writing a "side story" ?

It's because my diary from back then was so crappy and I didn't record many notable things that had happened but because I had forgotten when exactly they happened so I'm just putting things in short stories.

Side Story begins!

When we first got to the island. We were told that there wouldn't be internet available for us to use. I thought it was okay since I wanted to do other things too. So our only 2 sources to the outside world were tv and the English Yomiuri Newspaper that arrives 2 days slower than the regular Japanese paper. When we got onto the island, a lot of us used phone cards to call family. I didn't. I didn't bother to call because there was nothing for me to call, it wasn't like I was hurt or anything. I wasn't about to spend on something that I would hardly ever use. It's important for some people though like Tudor since he has a little daughter back in Romania and I didn't think he brought a phone card so he must had been worried sick about his family. Hmmm....I did want to call Ms.*F though.......

Usually, there were 6 people working at the hotel.

Maeda san- She can speak English. If I remember correct it's because she grew up in an English speaking environment in Kobe.

Ozaki Takafumi- I think he understands English but he never ever spoke it in front of us though. He's from Sapporo.

Dai- I didn't get to know him that well....what a pity. He's from Tokyo and is on a trip by himself across Hokkaido.

Yanagiya san- The hotel owner. He usually sat behind the counter using the computer.

Yanagiya san's wife- Super energetic, hyper even. She's always super busy around breakfast and dinner time. She wanted us to call her mama san. She always welcomed us back with "okaerinasai!" when we got back from the dig. I will refer to her as mama san from now on.

The elder of the Yanagiya sons- I forgot his name. I am so sorry.... He is different from others, he has some sort of disability but I didn't want to ask about the specifics.

Others

Yanagiya Shota- The youngest in the family. I think he's in 2nd year of senior high. He plays badminton for his school team and actually competes for them too. He would have a lot of interaction with us in the future and someone would want to have a lot of interaction with him.

The others from the fieldwork

Chen- I really think she's different. How? I don't know exactly but it's a good kind of different.

Joran- I forgot when but he found out I play Pokemon so he told me he plays Pokemon too and by the terms he used, I knew he's a Pokemaniac too. Too bad, he left his ds in Holland. Joran also understood some Japanese.

Erin Bird- Erin studied some Japanese before. Sometimes, Erin is a pushover.....sometimes.

Tom- He knows a lot of things....mostly boring things.

Amanda- She is soooo witty. It was like anything that came out of her mouth could be some classic lines.

Daniela- She's a cool and fun person to hang around with. She's pretty loud too but not at Seung-wan's level. Daniela knows Spanish because of her Chilean background.

Some notes on Rebun Island.

Rebun Island's other name is the island of flowers. There are lots of unique species of plants on the island. The whole island along with Rishiri Island are part of a national park. Everybody drives on the island because out of necessity.  The bus only comes once every hour so you have to know how to drive. There is only really one main road on the island and that road doesn't even go full circle hahahaha.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 5

Big Erin.

Chen and I

Feeding time

Tom Dougherty-

Tudor.

Mt. Rishiri

Hotel Rebun-so/ 禮文莊

Last time on Spirited Away in Japan...
I finally got my luggage back. What an ordeal!

Anyways, back to the story

Bye bye Wakkanai!

Our group sat down on the tatami floor and brought our luggage on it but then the staff came and reminded us very kindly that we shouldn't put them on the tatami. I sat down and started chatting with Chen, this is what she prefers to be called in English. She said she had just graduated from National Taiwan University. I complimented her saying she must be very smart. She politely said no. So modest! I asked her why she was so surprised about me being there. She replied saying that she had asked UofA whether any other Taiwanese people had joined the project and they said no. I told her I applied using my Canadian passport and I even mentioned that in my introduction but then she said she forgot to read them. I had fun chatting with Chen but I also chatted with the guy who sat across from me. He was reading a comic book at that time. His name is Ed. Since, I actually knew the comic he was reading about so we had some conversation topics. Ed had came to Wakkanai, a few days before us. I asked him what he did, he said he did nothing. LOL Like Ingrid, Ed is an undergrad student who goes to UofA.  At the same time, I met Erin. Erin is a few years more "mature" than Erin of Oregon. Big Erin, as some of us would call her in the future, is a graduate student from UofA.

Even though I was having a lot of fun talking to Chen, I decided to go out to the dock and see the ocean. I saw a lot of people feeding seagulls, including Tom. Tom is an graduate student from Maryland. He goes to University of Hawaii and had studied at Ryukyu University. Oh and Tom lacks hair. I met another team member while I was on the deck. His name is Tudor. Tudor is from Romania and his accent is really really heavy. At first, I couldn't understand his English so I just nodded and said, "oh", "yep", "Um hum", "I see." I was able to understand him after some time but he definitely had the coolest accent there.

Tom餵鳥中/Tom feeding a seagull

When we were getting close to Rebun Island, we passed by Mt. Rishiri. I think it's called the Hokkaido Fuji because of its resemblance with the actual Fuji from Shizuoka.  In around 30minutes or so, we had arrived in Rebun Island's biggest city/town, Kafuka.  There were many different hotels that had sent shuttles to pick people up from the port and ours did too....in the form of a professor. We stopped at a convenient store because the professor said there wasn't any convenient stores nearby. After hearing that, I jumped at the chance. I bought over 2000yen of candies.  Yes, I like candies :)

Kafuka Port

On the way to the hotel, I was paying to the scenery of the island and it really amazed me to the natural green outnumber the crazy made-up colors by man. Hmmm? Wait, was that a convenient store that we just passed? Right after I had that thought, we arrived at our hotel, Hotel Rebun-so.
