Spirited Away in Japan Episode 18

Chanchan yaki

Melon!

Nothing happened last time except I got sick

Anyways....

When I woke up, I felt that my cold was getting better.

When we were digging, we seemed to have found a hearth because of the charcoal and the burnt bones and such. Lindsay collected some of the material to bring back to England for dating. Usually, we take turns doing different tasks so we don't have a fixed spot of where we dig so that day I got to dig out the canid bone that Chen initially unearthed. After lunch, Ed, Big Erin, and I went to our lab at the northern tip of Rebun Island. We call that lab, Silent Hill, because it's creepy and foggy like the game plus it had been abandoned for 12 years. The school is about 10minutes drive from our site and it is possible to see Russia from there because it is the most northern spot of the island. The "newest" thing I saw in there was a newspaper article talking about Matsuzaka Daisuke. LOL We just did some cleaning of the things we dug out like using toothbrush to brush away the dried up dirt. We also check to see if we missed out on any special finds like pottery with motif or burnt bones, or even human bones. We were chatting and Erin told us that when she entered university, she wanted to do drama but in the end she switched to archaeology. She also asked us a lot of archaeology questions which to my surprise, I was actually able to get them all right. After that, we got a ride back and I went back to my pit and continued my dig.

But ya.....that school was definitely a strange one.

At dinner, the profs told us they were heading to Sapporo for the weekend for a conference so the phd and the master students would be in charge.

Didn't do much at night so went to sleep at the usual 10.

The next day, I woke up to find that the cold was actually worse than ever. The whole digging thing didn't really help too.

At dinner, Kato sensei brought a box of melons that were sent from Furano by his students. On the box, it said Furano's specialty product. Also, Shota invited us to go to his school's festival and we heard from Toshiko san that Shota was going to dance. lol

Later that night, Hugh came asking Chen and I about kimono. He asked us whether if Sapporo sold them or not, we said of course but it would probably be expensive. He said price wasn't an issue because it's for her daughter and it would be a good souvenir.

With that, I ended my crappy sick day.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 17

Ya, it's been a while but I will be updating this blog again.

As you may know, most of the content is based on my diary and what I remembered and I got lazier and lazier with the diary so I will be combining several days into 1 entry from now on.

Last time

We went to the museum in Kafuka but I felt sick afterwards.

I woke up feeling really sick. The usual running nose, sore throat, coughing...etc. I didn't feel like going to out to dig but I still went anyway.

I remember the weather wasn't very well and my nose just wouldn't quit sneezing. Terrible just terrible. Another thing that annoyed me was Ingrid. In my diary, I wrote down, "Ingrid was being an annoying dickshit as usual." Whatever she did or said, probably the latter, really got to me. I did however found a canid skull tho so that was exciting. The professors weren't sure if the skull was a dog skull or a fox one because there were foxes on the island and dogs were brought by people.

After the dig, I went to check out the Funadomari map because I remember seeing a pharmacy. I followed the map and got to the pharmacy and went in. There wasn't anybody in the store and I even said, "Suimasen~ Ano...." I said it really loud and still, nobody came. I saw the cold medicine right in front of me in the store counter but sigh*....so out of my reach....

At dinner, there was this special candy that we had never gotten it before (and we never got it again...) and I remember Toshiko san was explaining about it too. Everybody ate it and said it was really good but unfortunately, I lost my sense of taste that night.

After dinner, either Toshiko san or Mama san noticed I kept on sneezing so one of them asked me if I had brought medicine. I said no, so Mama san just got me this medicine pack which I paid, I think it was around 200 yen.

I went to sleep a bit early because I just felt like shit.

The next day when I woke up, I noticed my throat wasn't so sore anymore.

It was raining slightly but we went out to dig anyway. We dug for about 2 hrs until the rain forced us to take an early lunch. Again, Ingrid was being annoying and according to myself, she was being an annoying fuckface. We were anticipating whether we were going to keep on digging or not because the rain just kept on falling with no sign that it would stop. Finally, Dr. Weber decided we would head back to the hotel.

We got back to the hotel and I didn't do anything until Kato sensei asked Chen and I if we wanted a ride to Marine mart. We went there and bought loads of candies and I even bought a mini instant noodles. The candies I bought were mostly area-limited or season limited candies. I also bought two packs of caramel candies, chocolate and cream flavor! Those flavors were just so exotic to me....

Tempura soba/

Made in Hokkaido...not really

Pretz!
We walked into Pan ya san's shop. It turned out his name was 哀原, Aihara. Even though, we knew his name but we still refer to him as Pan ya san in the future. We also saw his wife who asked us what we liked to have for lunch. I said the chocolate bread was good so that would be good enough for me. Chen said she wanted the yakisoba (noodle) bread, it's something she had been talking to me forever ever since we got on the island.

After dinner, I sat down at the lobby and chatted with Shota. I asked him if he had a girlfriend and he said no. I also asked him which of the girls here was the cutest. He blushed and I made a gesture towards Jess who happened to be there. He said yes, it was her. I told Chen about Shota not having a girlfriend but I didn't tell her about the Jess thing.

Went to bed at 10 and ended the day.....

To Be Continued...

Ingrid was being an annoying dickface."

在社區中心的時候Ingrid好像又說了什麼煩人的是所以我日記寫說" she was being an annoying fuckface."

我好像還沒在tw看過這兩種口味/I don't think I've seen the 2 flavors in tw before.

Spirited Away in Japan Episode 16

Tudor can beat these guys up/Tudor

Yanagiya san's ancestor...probably

Eclipse Observation Monument

Shiroi Koibito/

Previously
Matsuri was pretty cool~

I woke up to find my sore was a bit sore but oh well it was probably nothing....or so I thought. It was raining so we were waiting for any announce on whether we would still be digging or not. As expected, Dr. Weber announced that the dig would be canceled for the entire day. We thought we had the entire day off but Amanda then told us that she would be arranging us to go to the local museum in Kafuka which was fine by everyone. I had been wanting to go back to Kafuka for a while now because I wanted to buy Shiroi Koibito, a kind of white chocolate cookie.

Rewind back to few days ago...

I asked Toshiko san if Funadomari had a place that was selling Shiroikoibito. She said Funadomari isn't a tourist spot so I wouldn't be able to find it in town. Takafumi said I might be able to find it in Kafuka tho.

So we ended up spending the morning in Kafuka.

Kafuka Museum is a small municipal museum but nonetheless, it still has a lot of information on the development of Rebun Island. The exhibits include contemporary Rebun culture all the way back to Jomon period.

There were some pretty interesting artifacts such as several bone tools as well as some finely crafted bone figurines. The exhibit's section on the early development of Rebun Island made me realize something.....Yanagiya san's ancestors were some of the first people who came to Rebun Island! So in a way...Shota's family are bunch of trailblazers.

Bone Figurines/

After the visit, we split into two groups. Ed, Seung-wan, Chen, Erin, Daniela, and I went to see the jinsha in Kafuka. The jinsha has a monument for an eclipse observation....what a weird reason to build a monument. When we were there, Seung-wan was complaining about the weather being too hot. She asked me if I could lend her my shirt. I said sure but then when she was putting it on, she was like, "Why is this so small? I can't button the shirt? Is this a girl's one?" No, Seung-wan. It's not a girl's clothes. You have boobs while I will have man boobs in the future but that was why the shirt was small. When we left, we saw two little girls, probably sisters and like kids from Funadomari, they politely greeted us. We were going to a Buddhist temple but it was closed and wasn't the way we imagined it as it was super new.

From Seung-wan's camera/Seung-wan的照片

We got back to the dock and bought some souvenir and I finally bought my Shiroi Koibito! We sat down on the dock and saw a painting that says, "We <3 Rebun." I took a picture of it and it was probably the best picture I had taken in Japan.

I <3 Rebun too
Shiroi Koibito/

When we got back, I secretly gave Chen a piece of Shiroi Koibito. I knew that she wanted to try it too from our past conversations so I just decided to give her one. I also gave Toshiko san one too for her hard work of taking care of us.

After we got back and ate lunch, Chen and the others went on the hiking trail by the lake while I went to the jinsha in Funadomari. The jinsha is located on the hill at the end of the town center on a hill. The bottom of the hill was where the kids started their matsuri parade. From the top of the hill, I was able to see all the way to Hamanaka where we were digging. Just an awesome view. Everyone returned by late afternoon and they were telling me about a horse they saw and about the horse's giant 5th leg hahahaha.

The dinner was fabulous and it was nice to have non-miso soup for a change. We had a creamy pumpkin/squash soup~ The tataki was nice too because I'm a big fan of any tataki.

After dinner, Toshiko san taught us Japanese in the lobby. Such a good teacher~

At night, a bunch of foreigners showed up at the hotel! Oh my God......foreigners, well new foreigners.... Turned out they were had a conference in Sapporo then after that they started traveling and they somehow ended up in Rebun. They came to Rebun-so instead of other hotels because they were asking where they could stay in Rebun and they happened to have asked the staff at the museum. So the staff naturally just told them where the biggest concentration of foreigners were on the island. They later went to sing Karaoke~

Wait, there's also Amanda but......I never figured out which room she slept in.....There was even a short thing about that but that will be for another day.

Caterpillar
When we got to Rebun, it must had been caterpillar season since they were everywhere! On Rebun, the wind is very strong so it was pretty funny to see them crawl, it was like seeing a fast-forwarding of  regular caterpillar crawling. When they move their body shape becomes like this ---> Ω

Takafumi
Takafumi turned out to be somekind of a toy salesman from Sapporo. Don't know what was going on with the job, didn't want to ask.

Tudor
Tudor is a beast. Tudor could dig so fast and still not miss any potential lithics. Tudor is like Jesus. There was a hill besides the site and one day when we finished work, we just saw Tudor on top of that hill. It must had been only maybe 10 minutes since our work was done and he climbed that hill in that short amount of time. People go to the beach to swim sometimes but they never venture off far except Tudor. People were amazed by Tudor's awesomeness but he, himself was quite modest and embarrassed about it. Tudor is also a dad to a 1yr old daughter at that time and he is happily married to his wife. It probably must had been hard for him since we were without internet for a while... One time I said something like, "Tudor doesn't need to buy a plane ticket home. He can just dig his way back to Romania." Tudor is GOD.

Local Kids
Usually by the time we got off work, classes would be out (Japanese students got classes in July), so whenever we went into town, we would see kids. The kids were so polite as they would always politely hello to us. I like polite kids then I would get cruel reminder of my ill-mannered friends.

Pun-ya san
Pun-ya san is the local bakery owner and he was the one who delivered lunch to us. Whenever we saw him when we were working then it meant that lunch was close! He and Edelweiss were the symbols of our lunch.

Seals
There are seals at Rebun and you could see them when you look out to the ocean. They're kinda like dogs of the sea. They bark (right word for seal?) and they look like stones from afar but there were so many of them that they really couldn't be missed.

Takafumi

Tudor

Pun=麵包. Ya=屋. 我們平常吃的午餐就是由船泊鎮上麵包店的老闆幫我們送過來的. 當他出現的時就代表午餐時間就要到了.
